The leather Value Chain is one of the crucial manufacturing sub-sectors being prioritized under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1 2021 – 2025).

The NDS1 envisages to strengthen horizontal and vertical collaboration of value chain players to increase capacity utilization in the manufacture of leather value-added products from 30% in 2020 to 50% by 2025, and export of leather products from 10% of total production in 2020 to 25% by 2025.

The targets can only be achieved if competitiveness gaps are addressed across the whole value chain from the farming node to the retail end.

The National Competitiveness Commission conducted a Leather Value Chain Competitiveness Analysis and produced a Report which identified challenges impinging on competitiveness and proffered evidence-based recommendations to both the private sector and Government.

Implementation of identified recommendations is critical to enhance Competitiveness of the value chain.
